About

Venice (called Venesia in Italian, and once called Venexia) is a city in northeastern Italy. It's the capital of the Veneto region. The city is built on 118 small islands, separated by open water and canals, and connected by 438 bridges. These islands are in a shallow lagoon between the Po and Piave rivers.

As of 2025, about 249,000 people live in the wider area of Venice (called the Comune of Venice), with around 51,000 living in the old city on the islands (called the centro storico), and the rest living on the mainland.
