Royston Cave

Royston Cave us unique in Europe. Believed to date from the 14th Century it is a man made cave in the shape of a beehive, with a small aperture at the top for ventilation. Its most distinctive feature is an extensive range of wall carvings representing the Crucifixion, the Holy family and several saints, among them St Katherine, St Laurence and St Christopher. There is evidence from the wall carvings and other sources that the cave may have been used by the Knights Templar. There is no written record of what the cave was used for so theories as to its origin and use abound. These range from a secret meeting place for Templar's, a hermitage and an early Freemasons lodge. The cave is also where two significant ley lines cross.
