About Grosseto

Grosseto is a town in the Tuscany region of Italy. The old town area behind the walls is active and a some buildings date back 700 year. The Francesco church is form 1200, and was given to the town by Benedictine Friars. The church has gone through many renovations, and fires, and the bell tower struck by lightening and rebuilt in 1950's. The palace is from Aldobrandeschi family era from 1100's. This current day structure is a rebuild from early 1900's, and holds the Government administration. Civic Museum inside-walk the grounds. It is a nice walk around to get the feel for what the fort was like on layout. The fortress is in the middle of the historic area of the city, and really in the middle of the city. The fort area has been a protection area back before 1151 when the Aldobrandeschi family took control of this region. They lost out to Sienese clan and the region was under battles and Siena control until 1557. The walls of the fort were destroyed numerous times. The Medici family then took over. A well preserved area that serves to keep intact the beach and pine forest and marshes around it as well as surrounded by hills. The park stretches for about 50 miles- and has many trails throughout. We tried to reach one tower that looked far away, and it really was. After 2+ hours of walking, on the sandy beach, we turned around. The park is very well preserved and been under protection as a park for many decades. This is a nice view of the area from the beach to the marshes to the hills in the distance. It was all established for water control for the inlet and to keep some in ans let out when too high. They do grow crops on some of the reclaimed land inside the area under control of water flow. The whole area is controlled for the flow of water and they maintain at certain level to avoid flooding, while allowing for crop growing.
