Dhauli Giri Hills

Believed to be the place where the Kalinga Battle was fought, Dhauli Giri is now a place of utter peace, housing a Shanti Stupa. The place is primarily known for King Ashoka's Rock Edicts found here, where he shares his concerns about the "welfare of the world" and his musings about Buddhism. It is believed that the Daya River nearby turned red with the blood of the soldiers who died in the battle of Kalinga and this very sight bought about a turnaround in the emperors feelings and thoughts. Following his change of heart, King Ashoka ensured several chaityas, stupas and pillars were built near and around the place to propagate Buddhism. Today, atop this small hillock stands a spectacular Peace Pagoda built by Japan Buddha Sangha and the Kalinga Nippon Buddha Sangha. Apart from this, one can also see some age old sculptures, inscriptions, caves and temples at Dhauli Giri.
