The most interesting way to reach the castle is to climb the 160 covered steps to the Cathedral. A short walk through the medieval streets brings you to the welcome sight of shaded benches and a great view of Lausanne next to the Castle. Unfortunately after all this exercise only the exterior can be appreciated due to the government offices.
